Girl in Yellow
Did anyone read Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar? It is a hoot. I am a natural comedienne - I watched Johnny Carson well into the night as a tender first grader and watched Charlie Chaplin movies in kindergarten. Imagine a pigtailed girl laughing insanely while parked in front of a black and white movie. That was me. I also watched the movie Three Amigos a gazillion times as a child. I say all this to say - I appreciate a good laugh.
Anyway, back to Sideways Stories. My elementary teacher read it aloud to us. Imagine a whole class laughing. Good memories. There was a character in the class who could draw really fast. I’m like her. I can fill up a sketchbook in one evening once I get into the flow.
This sketch was a lovely surprise of the flow. I whipped out this sketch in about a minute. Funny how lines and color make a distinct face and a distinct expression. This drawing reminds me of someone I’ve actually known. She was an African American girl, but this drawing looks like an Asian girl wearing a raincoat. Maybe this drawing is fascinating because I keep asking myself “Who does this remind me of? Who was she?” As I tell my students - good art makes you ask good questions . . .
