The Black Profile

It’s no secret - I love the black profile.  Prominent lips, mouth, and nose.  And I love black hair in its natural state.   Nappy, kinky, poofy, etc.  Both are fascinating for me.  Most of my sketches I are of these two subjects and done from memory.

But the secret is - I’m a formalist.  I’m more concerned with the arrangement of lines, shapes, and colors first and foremost.  I’m not trying to draw anyone in particular.  I just enjoy watching how two curved lines make an eye, how colors merge together to make a fleshy tone.  I’ve been asked, “Who are these people?” or “Why do you do faces?” Perhaps because I’m most familiar with the human face.  It’s a good training ground to play with colors, lines, and shapes.  To practice harmony.
